Kalutara District in the West of Sri Lanka symbolizes a mixed socio-economic pattern including various economic groups. Agro-based industries such as tea, cinnamon, rubber cultivation, daily wage labour and mixed employment are the main living means of people. MMF was approached by the Self Help Group Resource Centre (SHGRC) with a proposal and MMF agreed to support the community empowerment project to provide opportunities for vulnerable families. The proposed project focuses on creating community based organizations, vocational training opportunities for youth, awareness creation on importance of pre-schooling among parents, income generation activities, tea plantation and tea nursery management, establishing tea collection centers in 05 villages in Baduraliya. Names of such villages are, Paragoda (825C – Paragoda West), Molkawa (825A Molkawa), Kandawadiya (824G – Bulathsinhala West), Ihalawelgama (824A) and Kirimetiwalakada (823B – Kobawaka South).

The main objective of the Project is to establish and empower civil society mechanism within 250 vulnerable families to build confidence and social values to access their equal rights and opportunities through community participation. The total number of direct beneficiaries in the project period are 250 families. In 2018, MMF signed a 03 year agreement with SHGRC to support these beneficiaries suffering from extreme poverty. This program is a 03 year project.
