One of our initial projects established to help struggling widows from Weligama, South of Sri Lanka. From the get-go, the project was initiated to empower these women with facilities for candle making as they already had experience and had employment pre-tsunami.
Weligama, Christ The Healer Church was running a Candle Making project to provide employment for widows of the area. They were mostly victims of the devastating Tsunami in 2004.
MM-Foundation stepped forward to upgrade the equipment and to build a small factory to enable these women in their livelihood activities. The project primarily aimed to improve the technology and infrastructure needed for these women to continue making good quality candles.
Mr. & Mrs. Gunnar Askbo visited the project and made an impactful decision to support building the new building and provide new equipment, ultimately funding the project by SEE – Sørlandets Elektro Engros of Kristiansand, Norway. Today many of them have become professionals in making candles for churches and hotels.
We are thankful for the opportunity of growth given to these vulnerable women.
