Child Action Lanka (CAL) having completed 13 years of its mission in Sri Lanka now counts 1,003 registered children (01 month to 18 years old) in many centres around Sri Lanka. These centres are located in Kandy (established in 2006), Nuwara Eliya (established in 2009), Kelaniya (established in 2010), Akkarayan (established in 2012), Killinochchi (established in 2012), Batticaloa (established in 2012) and Galle (established in 2017).
Main objective of CAL is to facilitate the empowerment of street and underprivileged children in the society to lead dignified life. Its main focus is on improving education with special focus on early childhood education, life skills development & vocational training. CAL also emphasize on health & nutrition and child protection of its target group.
CAL was subsequently registered as a NGO with the clear objective of serving street and underprivileged children by providing them a safe place to spend the weekday. Child Development Centres cover crèche, playgroup, preschool and afterschool care by providing facilities such as meals, school uniforms, shoes and clothing, books and tuition (to cover academic curriculum from their respective schools) along with a washing area and a laundry. Children are also loved, cared and mentored by trained caregivers, teachers and other service providers.
Child Development Centre in Galle began its project in 2017 providing a preschool facility for 26 local underprivileged children who needed assistance. The wider community made requests for study aid with primary and secondary education, which then gave rise to opportunities for a total number of 36 students. Many students who joined the program were victims of poverty, abuse and survivors of single parents owing to drug trafficking and live under deprived conditions devoid of basic facilities. The program has since grown to a total of 71 children.
